Handmade Christmas cheer starts here!
Celebrate the season with these easy to make cutout ornaments! They’re inexpensive and great for Christmas gifts as well as for decorating your tree.
And the kids can help cut them out and decorate them too! Add their names and the date to the back of the ornaments and they’re instant family keepsakes. Start a new tradition and make them every year!
I used Sculpey oven bake clay for this project as I always have a box of it on hand. It’s easy to use, durable and it can be sanded and painted after it’s baked and cooled.
I worked a ball of the clay in my hands to make it pliable and used a rolling pin to flatten it as if it was cookie dough. When the dough was about 1/4 inch thick I began cutting out ornaments using mini cookie cutters. Any size cookie cutter works!
Smooth the edges of the ornaments with your fingers and place them on a parchment paper covered baking sheet. They won’t spread like cookie dough!
Using a sculpting tool, pencil or toothpick, make a hole in the ornaments so you can hang them when they’re finished. If you’re going to glue the ornaments onto a project, the holes aren’t necessary.
You can add textures or lines to add detail to the shapes, like those shown on the holly leaves.
When you’re happy with your ornaments they’re ready to bake following the package directions.
When the ornaments have cooled they’re ready to decorate and personalize with acrylic paints. Glitter can be sprinkled onto the wet paint for added sparkle. If you decide to add glitter later it can be added to a sealer coat of Mod Podge.
The finished ornaments can be used in so many different ways. Add them to wreaths like the one shown here, hang them on the tree, use them as gift package tie-ons and decorate mini trees.
