Art+Design=Joy.  That is one equation I completely understand, because art and design have always brought me joy!

Following my art education and subsequent job progression from ad agency artist to art director, I realized that the joy I derived from art resulted from creating it, not directing.

I took the plunge into self-employment and created a collection of watercolor illustrations for greeting cards, and that eventually led to a wonderful career in art licensing.  Seeing the need for a creative partner, I knew the perfect candidate (as luck would have it): my husband Rex.  He joined me as my business partner and we’ve collaborated on designs that have been licensed on hundreds of products in the United States and internationally.

The ultimate satisfaction comes from being able to do work that we love from our home studio.  Art is our profession, but it’s also our shared joy and woven into every aspect of our lives.

Art Design Joy is a new direction in our artistic journey and an opportunity to share original art we’ve created and vintage art we’ve collected in the Art Design Joy free image library.  Download art for framing and home decor and DIY projects for holidays, special occasions and every day.

We hope to encourage you to live your life filled with creative joy!

The wonderful part of the creative process is the opportunity to experiment with new materials, mediums and techniques in our designs.  It keeps us moving forward in the artistic journey!

Trained as designers and painters, we initially created designs using watercolor, acrylics, pastels and oils.  This evolved over time to include an artistic grafting of paintings, illustrations and photography combined as digital art.

A love of vintage ephemera led us to collect thousands of antique postcards, books, papers, photographs and prints that provide timeless creative inspiration.  The images are scanned and integrated with our original illustrations for a modern vintage hybrid.  Something borrowed-something new!

vicky-howard-booksArt licensing has provided me with a career opportunity greater than anything I could’ve dreamed of.  It has allowed me to do work I love, collaborating with licensees on collections of designs for their products.

I entered into art licensing at a time where there were many opportunities for success and have been fortunate to have designs licensed on products such as books, fabric, tableware, cards, gift bags, banners, kitchen textiles, prints and home and holiday decor.  Those products have been sold in the USA and internationally in stores ranging from Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond, Christmas Tree Shops, Jo-ann Fabrics, Kohl’s and Lowe’s to Target and Walmart.

Shown are examples of licensed designs and gift books published by Andrews McMeel and available on Amazon.

The reality of a changing retail marketplace has had an impact on art licensing opportunities, but it’s my hope that where there is a will there will always be a way for talented artists to create art and find professional success!
